Lewis Foundation Urges Students to Take SAT/ACT

No or low SAT and ACT scores are preventing otherwise suitable candidates from being considered for full scholarships to the University of Central Florida (UCF).

“The last thing we want to see is any student missing out on an opportunity to get a full ride to UCF because they did not sit their SAT and ACT exams,” said Andrica Smith-Munroe, spokeswoman for the Lewis Foundation.

A newly established charitable organization, the entity is partnering with private luxury resort community, Albany and the Tavistock Group, an international private investment firm, to provide five need-based scholarships, mostly to first-generation college students.

“Most college applications require students to submit SAT or ACT scores. UCF is no different. The scores on the SAT and ACT allow the university to narrow down the playing field from thousands of applicants and make decisions on acceptance. With low or no test results it’s difficult for a US university to know if a Bahamian student is a fit,” Mrs Smith-Munroe explained.

Roughly ?? percent of the applications the foundation received fit into this category, missing either or both standardized tests universally accepted by American tertiary institutions to gauge college readiness.

“The acceptance rate at UCF is around 50 percent. For every 100 applicants, half are rejected. We need applicants with solid SAT and/or ACT scores,” said Mrs Smith-Munroe.“The deadline is fast approaching. Although we are pushing for all applications to be into the school by September 1, the international student deadline for enrollment in the spring semester beginning January, there are scholarship opportunities for the fall 2020 semester for college hopefuls requiring more time to meet UCF’s admission requirements.”

The first batch of scholarship recipients are expected to be announced in ??. The foundation’s generous scholarships cover the cost of tuition, room and board and textbooks.

In order to apply, prospects must provide proof of Bahamian citizenship and acceptance into UCF’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management Program. Approved majors include event management, entertainment management, restaurant and food service and hospitality management.

The scholarship is renewable up to eight semesters based on good academic standing at the university, whose main campus is based in Orlando. With more than 68,000 students, UCF is one of the largest universities in the US. It is ranked as a best-value university by Kiplinger, a Washington, D.C.-based publisher of business forecasts and rankings. UCF has also made leading business magazine, Forbes’ list of the most affordable colleges in the US.

UCF says it graduates well-rounded individuals familiar with all aspects of the hospitality industry including finance, operations, customer service theory, human resources and marketing and communications.  As post-secondary education becomes cost prohibitive, a primary goal of the Lewis Foundation is to ensure low-income and first-generation college students have access to the financial aid required to pursue a tertiary degree.
